Fisheries Popotai Taumaka Temporary Closure Notice 2023 (MPI 1763)

Pursuant to section 186B of the Fisheries Act 1996, the Director Fisheries Management (acting pursuant to a delegation from the Director-General of the Ministry for Primary Industries under the Public Service Act 2020), after complying with the requirements of that section, gives the following notice.

Notice

1. Title

This notice is the Fisheries Popotai Taumaka Temporary Closure Notice 2023.

2. Commencement

This notice comes into force on 1 December 2023.

3. Revocation of this notice

This notice is revoked on the close of 30 November 2024.

4. Popotai Taumaka closed in respect of Pāua

(1) A person must not take blackfoot paua or yellowfoot pāua from the Popotai Taumaka closure area while this notice is in force.

(2) In this clause –

blackfoot pāua means shellfish of the species Haliotis iris.

yellowfoot pāua means shellfish of the species Haliotis australis.

(3) Popotai Taumaka Closure Area means all those South Island fisheries waters enclosed by a line every point of which is 1.0 km from the mean high-water mark of the Open Bay Islands.

(4) For the avoidance of doubt, the fisheries waters around Bignell Reef are included in the Popotai Taumaka closure area as described in clause 4(3).
