Notice of Making of Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2022

In accordance with section 74(1)(b) of the Legislation Act 2019 and section 161(3) of the Land Transport Act 1998 (as it applied before 28 October 2021), notification is hereby given of the making of Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2022 (“Rule”).

The objective of the Rule is to contribute to road safety by—

  1. providing for a whole-of-network approach where speed management is considered alongside investment in safety infrastructure; and
  2. empowering or requiring road controlling authorities to set speed limits for roads under their control; and
  3. setting out requirements road controlling authorities must comply with when setting speed limits.

The Rule comes into force on 19 May 2022. The Rule also revokes Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2017, and amends Land Transport Rule: Traffic Control Devices 2004.

The Rule is available at: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/rules.

The Rule is also available for inspection free of charge, and can be purchased, at the National Office of the NZ Transport Agency, 50 Victoria Street, Wellington, or by emailing rules@nzta.govt.nz.
