Renewal of Application to Take Marine Mammals

Pursuant to section 5 of the Marine Mammals Protection
Act 1978, the New Zealand King Salmon Company Limited has applied to the Director-General of Conservation to renew and amend its permit to "take" New Zealand fur seals at any of its approved (current or future) salmon farms in
the Marlborough Sounds.
Currently approved sites under the Resource Management Act 1991 are:
- Ruakaka Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound
- Otanerau, Queen Charlotte Sound
- Te Pangu Bay, Tory Channel
- Clay Point, Tory Channel
- Forsyth Bay, Pelorus Sound
- Waihinau Bay, Pelorus Sound
Specifically, the application is for a permit:
1. for a term of 15 years, and any renewal thereof;
2. to catch and release seals which have entered salmon cages;
3. to harass seals while attempting to deter them from entering salmon farms; and
4. to take, catch, injure, attract, herd, harass, disturb or possess seals where such actions result from the actions specified in points 2 and 3 above.

Any person wishing to make a submission on this application can do so by writing to the Conservator, Department of Conservation, Private Bag 5, Nelson 7042, within 28 days after the publication of this notice.
Unless a person making a submission states to the contrary in the submission, that person will be deemed to give his/her consent to the release under the Official Information Act 1982 of all the information in the submission.
