Maritime New Zealand (Functions and Duties) Notice 2009

Pursuant to section 431(2) of the Maritime Transport Act 1994 and section 112 of the Crown Entities Act 2004, the Minister of Transport gives the following notice.
N o t i c e
1. Title—This notice is the Maritime New Zealand (Functions and Duties) Notice 2009.
2. Application—This notice applies to Maritime
New Zealand (which is continued under section 429 of
the Maritime Transport Act 1994).
3. Background—On 19 May 2006, the International Maritime Organization adopted Regulation 19-1 of Chapter V of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974, which concerns Long Range Identification and Tracking of ships (LRIT).
4. Additional functions and duties—Maritime
New Zealand is directed to carry out the following additional functions and duties:
(a) To ensure New Zealand’s participation in the
LRIT system by implementing New Zealand’s LRIT obligations, as follows:
(i) To provide a data centre for receiving LRIT information;
(ii) to provide appropriate reports to the International Maritime Organization; and
(iii) to bear all costs associated with receipt of,
and requests for, LRIT information between Maritime New Zealand and other Contracting States;
(b) to undertake any duties that may be required for the purpose of performing the functions specified in paragraph (a).
