Direction to the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology for Climate Change Adaptation Research Scheme

Under section 8A of the Foundation for Research, Science, and Technology Act 1990, I direct the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (“the foundation”) to allocate funds in accordance with Climate Change Adaptation Research Scheme (“the scheme”) as specified
in this notice.
Nature of the Scheme
The scheme will fund:
? climate modelling research required to understand how New Zealand can mitigate or adapt to the impacts of climate change; and
? capability building within the science sector in order to undertake and apply that research.
These activities should be undertaken via a multidisciplinary, collaborative or cross-research organisation approach.
Scheme Objectives
The scheme’s objectives are to support the New Zealand Government’s policy objectives for climate change, which are to:
? protect our primary and resource intensive industries;
? respond to new human and animal health threats;
? maintain and enhance our biodiversity; and
? develop communities resilient to changes in the climate and associated hazards.
Estimate of Funds
I estimate that $2.5 million per annum from the Vote Research Science and Technology Environmental Research Output Expense will be appropriated for the scheme.
Actual appropriations will be published each year in the Estimates of Appropriations.
Period of the Scheme
This notice is effective from 1 January 2008.
I estimate the scheme will operate for a minimum of five years from the date of this notice.
Monitoring Agency
The scheme will be monitored by the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.
