Controlled Area, Movement Controls and Procedures in Respect of Unwanted Organism Varroa destructor Notice

I hereby give public notice, pursuant to the Biosecurity Act 1993, of a controlled area, movement controls and procedures in respect of the unwanted organism Varroa destructor.
N o t i c e
1. Commencement-This notice takes effect on Thursday, 9 November 2006 at 1.00 p.m., and replaces the notice issued on
16 June 2006.
2. Controlled area declaration-Pursuant to section 131 (2) of the Biosecurity Act 1993, I hereby declare all parts of
New Zealand that fall within the area described as:
Starting at the eastern tip of "Farewell Spit" follow the coastline around the top of the South Island and down the West Coast to "Rocks Point"; continue in a straight line inland, in a south easterly direction to the summit of "Mt Domett" at 1646m; continue in a straight line in a southerly direction to the summit of "Nugget Knob" at a height of 1522m; continue in a straight line in a south easterly direction to the high point of 1045m in the "Hope Range" (grid reference 2477180 5952610); continue in a straight line east to the intersection of "State Highway No. 6" and "Big Bush Drive" near Hope Saddle; continue in a straight line in a southerly direction to high point 645m at grid reference 2485160 5947410; continue in a straight line in a south easterly direction to the summit of "Slips" hill at 849m; continue in a straight line in a south easterly direction to grid reference 2495580 5935550; continue in a straight line in a southerly direction to the intersection of "State Highway No. 63" and "Teetotal Road"; continue in a straight line south to "Peanter Peak" 1880m; continue in a straight line in a south westerly direction to the summit of "Mt Paske" at 2216m; continue in a straight line in a south easterly direction to "Island Saddle"; continue in a straight line in a south easterly direction to "Mt Sebastopol" at 2013m; continue in a straight line in an easterly direction to high point 1130m above Guide Hut in the Guide Valley; continue in a straight line in a north easterly direction to "Carters Saddle" at 1175m; continue in a straight line in a south easterly direction to "Mt Jackson" at 1524m; continue in a straight line in a north easterly direction to "Tinkers Saddle"; continue in a straight line in a north easterly direction to high point 2196m at grid reference 2559180 5908190; continue in a straight line in a north easterly direction to the summit of "Mt Alarm" at 2877m; continue in a straight line in a north easterly direction to the summit of "Mead Hill" at 1068m; continue in a straight line in a north easterly direction to "The Rock" at 745m; continue in a straight line in a north easterly direction to the summit of "Dog Hill" at 470m; continue in a straight line in a south easterly direction to the East Coast of the South Island at "Chancet Rocks"; follow the coastline north to "Cape Campbell"; continue in a straight line in a northerly direction to "Perano Head" of "Arapawa Island"; follow the coastline north to Cape Koamaru; continue in a straight line in a north westerly direction to "Cape Jackson"; continue in a straight line in a north westerly direction to the northern point of "Stephens Island"; continue in a straight line in a westerly direction to the start point, the eastern point of "Farewell Spit"
to be an area that is controlled for the purpose of limiting the spread of varroa bee mite (Varroa destructor, formerly known as Varroa jacobsoni), being an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993.
This area is referred to as "the controlled area" in the rest of this notice.
A map of the area described is displayed in Schedule 2 below.
3. Notice of Movement Controls-Pursuant to section 131 (3) (a) of the Biosecurity Act 1993, I hereby give notice that
the movement of the things listed in Schedule 1 below into, within, or from any part of the controlled area to any part of
New Zealand not in the controlled area is prohibited, except with the permission of an inspector or authorised person appointed under the Biosecurity Act 1993.
Schedule 1
Things Subject to Movement Control
(a) Honey bees (meaning Apis mellifera), at any stage of development, including live beehives, nucleus colonies, frames of bee brood, queen bees and escorts, package bees and bulk bees;
(b) Used beehives (meaning anything that is being or has been used for the keeping of honey bees), including any part of any used beehive;
(c) Unused beehives containing wax foundation;
(d) Unprocessed beeswax, propolis and pollen, and any honey that is not packaged for retail sale;
(e) Used beekeeping equipment (excluding protective clothing, smokers, and hive tools); and
(f) Any thing upon which, or within which, the varroa bee mite is present.
