Direction in Relation to Special Benefit Amendment (No 4)

To: The Chief Executive of the Department of Work and Income
Pursuant to section 5 of the Social Security Act 1964,
I direct that the amendments set out in this direction are to be read together with and deemed part of the Direction dated 10 February 1999 given to you under that section in relation to grants of special benefit.

A m e n d m e n t s
1. Title-(1) This is the Direction in Relation to Special Benefit Amendment (No. 4).
(2) In this amendment, the Direction in Relation to Special Benefit dated 10 February 1999 is called "the Direction".
2. Commencement-This Direction comes into effect
on 1 July 2000.
3. Clause 3.1 amended-Clause 3.1 of the Direction is amended by:
(a) omitting from the definition of a, the words "less c":
(b) omitting the definition of c:
(c) omitting the example, and substituting the example set out in the Schedule.

New example for Clause 3.1 of Direction:
"Example
An unmarried community wage earner with 2 dependent children, whose weekly chargeable income is $210.45 and whose weekly allowable costs are $94.30.
Special Benefit Calculation
Chargeable income $210.45
less allowable costs $94.30
= disposable income $116.15
standard costs $144.89
less disposable income $116.15
= Deficiency $28.74
= a $28.74

b is 30% of allowable costs ($94.30) = $28.29
A special benefit that is the lesser of a or b is justified,
i.e. $28.29, subject to paragraphs 3.3 and 3.4."

This Direction amends the Direction given on 10 February 1999 relating to the grant of special benefit by removing the $5 surcharge.
