Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Te Tai Hauāuru—Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki) (Notice No. MPI 1155)

Pursuant to Regulation 10 of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998, the Minister of Fisheries gives the following notice.

Notice

1. Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Te Tai Hauāuru – Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki) Notice 2020.

2. Commencement

This notice comes into force on 14 May 2020.

3. Customary Food Gathering Area/Rohe Moana

This notice applies to the customary food gathering area/rohe moana defined by clause 3 of the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Te Tai Hauāuru) Notice 2019; No. 2019/177, which is an area in the Taranaki Bight beginning approximately 20 nm offshore and extending south to the boundary of the South Island fisheries waters.

4. Tangata Whenua

The tangata whenua of the area/rohe moana are Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Tama, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Maru (Taranaki) Fisheries Trust, Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa Trust, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Ruanui, Nga Hapū o Ngāruahine Trust; Te Kahui o Taranaki Trust, Te Kahui o Rauru, Ngā Tāngata Tiaki o Whanganui; Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki; Te Patiki Holdings Ltd - Ngāti Hauiti, Te Ohu Tiaki o Rangitane te Ika a Māui, Muaupoko Tribal Authority, Atiawa ki Whakarongotai Charitable Trust, Raukawa ki te Tonga Trust, Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Inc., and Te Atiawa Poneke.

5. Appointment Cancelled

(1) The Minister of Fisheries has cancelled the appointment of Grant Huwyler as a Tangata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for the area/rohe moana.

(2) The cancellation took effect at the end of 24 April 2020.

6. New Appointment

(1) The Minister of Fisheries has appointed Ruakohatu Tamou as a Tangata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for the area/rohe moana.

(2) The appointment took effect on 25 April 2020.

Explanatory Note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998 (the regulations). It comes into force on 14 May 2020.

The notice relates to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana of the tangata whenua represented by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Tama, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Maru (Taranaki) Fisheries Trust, Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa Trust, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Ruanui, Nga Hapū o Ngāruahine Trust; Te Kahui o Taranaki Trust, Te Kahui o Rauru, Ngā Tāngata Tiaki o Whanganui; Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki; Te Patiki Holdings Ltd - Ngāti Hauiti, Te Ohu Tiaki o Rangitane te Ika a Māui, Muaupoko Tribal Authority, Atiawa ki Whakarongotai Charitable Trust, Raukawa ki te Tonga Trust, Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Inc., and Te Atiawa Poneke. The area/rohe moana is an area in the Taranaki Bight beginning approximately 20 nm offshore and extending south to the boundary of the South Island fisheries waters.

Notice is given of the cancellation of the appointment of a Tangata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for the area/rohe moana, and the appointment of a replacement. The Minister of Fisheries cancelled the appointment and made the replacement at the request of Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki.

The powers of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki are set out in the regulations.
