Pursuant to Schedule 21 Clause 1 of the Education Act 1989, I give notice that there are six upcoming vacancies in the membership of the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (“Teaching Council”).
Seven members have been elected by the teaching profession. I will be appointing a further six members. All members will take office on 1 July 2019.
When considering whether to appoint an individual as a member of the Teaching Council I will:
- take into account each candidate’s ability to carry out the duties of a member of the Teaching Council and represent the public interest; and
- have regard to the collective skills, experience, and knowledge making up the overall composition of the Teaching Council, including (but not limited to) the candidate’s knowledge and experience in any of the following areas:
- leadership experience and skills
- financial skills
- understanding of the partnership principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
At least one member will be appointed after consultation with representatives of parent and community interest groups in relation to schools and early childhood education services. I will also be seeking advice and nominations through other channels. Appointments will be considered by the Cabinet Appointments and Honours Committee in June 2019.
If you wish to nominate an individual to be considered for appointment to the Teaching Council, you can do this by emailing Appointments.Mailbox@education.govt.nz.
Dated at Wellington this 8th day of April 2019.
CHRIS HIPKINS, Minister of Education.
