Notice of Adopted Undersea Feature Names

Pursuant to sections 26 and 21(2) of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008, the
New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa ("Board") hereby gives notice of 33 adopted undersea feature names.
These are now official geographic names and are specified in the first column of the Schedule below.
The generic feature type that they relate to is set out in the second column of the Schedule.
The description for each name is set out in the third column of the Schedule.
The Board's final determination on these adopted undersea feature names took effect on 29 August 2013.

Akitio Ridge Ridge 40ø48.00'S Latitude, 177ø51.00'E Longitude. A north north-east trending ridge on the lower continental slope 110km offshore from Castlepoint. Rises from surrounding depths of 2400-2300m to a summit at 2100m deep. Depicted on Turnagain Chart¸, Lewis, 1976; Cook Chart¸, Baldwin & Lewis, 1991; Central Hikurangi Chart¸, Lewis et al., 1999; Turnagain Chart¸, Garlick & Mitchell, 2002.
Akitio Trough Trough 40ø50.00'S Latitude, 177ø40.00'E Longitude. A broad north north-east trending trough on the lower continental slope about 100km offshore, south of Cape Turnagain. The floor of the trough is between 2300m and 2500m deep. Depicted on Turnagain Chart¸, Lewis, 1976; Turnagain Chart¸, Garlick & Mitchell, 2002.
Aorangi Ridge Ridge 41ø31.00'S Latitude, 176ø52.00'E Longitude. A ridge trending north-east south-west at the bottom of the continental slope, 80km off the Wairarapa coast. Rises about 400m above the surrounding seabed to a depth of 2300m. Depicted on Palliser Chart¸, Mitchell, 1988; Cook Chart¸, Baldwin & Lewis, 1991; Central Hikurangi Chart¸, Lewis et al., 1999.
Aorangi Trough Trough 41ø31.00'S Latitude, 176ø46.00'E Longitude. A trough trending north-east south-west on the lower continental slope between the Aorangi Ridge to the east and Pukeroro Ridge to the west. To the south it opens out into the Hikurangi Trench. Flat floor at about 2800m. Depicted on Palliser Chart¸, Mitchell, 1988.
Bennett Knoll Knoll 41ø05.00'S Latitude, 178ø15.00'E Longitude. A knoll on the Hikurangi Margin off the Wairarapa continental slope. Depicted on Cook Chart¸, Baldwin & Lewis, 1991; Central Hikurangi Chart¸, Lewis et al., 1999.
Bounty Plateau Plateau 48ø00.00'S Latitude, 179ø00.00'E Longitude. A large undersea plateau that rises between the Bounty and Antipodes Islands. Separated from the remainder of the Campbell Plateau by the Pukaki Saddle. Formerly Bounty Platform. This position is given for Bounty Plateau in IHO/IOC (1988). Campbell Bank Bank 41ø46.00'S Latitude, 174ø45.00'E Longitude. A bank on the outer part of the continental shelf of north-eastern South Island. Rises from a surrounding 150m deep shelf to a minimum depth of 95m. Depicted on Palliser Chart¸, Pantin, 1961; Palliser Chart¸, Mitchell, 1988; Campbell Chart¸, Mitchell, 1988.
Cavalli Seamount Seamount 34ø08.00'S Latitude, 174ø05.00'E Longitude. An irregular-shaped, flat-topped seamount on the Northland Plateau. This is an isolated conical seamount which rises to 500m from a depth of 1800m. Depicted on North Cape Chart¸, Mitchell & Eade, 1990.
Colville Canyon Canyon 36ø10.00'S Latitude, 176ø38.00'E Longitude. A north-east south-west trending canyon to the north-west of Colville Knolls and south-east of Rakitu Canyon on the outer part of Bay of Plenty. Reaches a depth of 1750m. Depicted on Cuvier Chart¸, Wright, 1989.
Colville Knolls Knolls 36ø09.84'S Latitude, 176ø47.58'E Longitude. A dual-peaked knoll north-east of Great Barrier Island (Aotea Island). Rises to 735m from a depth of 1700m and has an area of 35.00km2. Depicted on Cuvier Chart¸, Carter, 1976; Cuvier Chart¸, Wright, 1989; Cook Chart¸, Baldwin & Lewis, 1991.
Cook Canyon Canyon 42ø42.50'S Latitude, 168ø23.80'E Longitude. Canyon complex originating off the Cook River / Weheka, West Coast, South Island, and wandering across the continental shelf and slope until merging with the Hokitika Canyon to form
the Cook Channel. Depicted on Resolution Chart¸, van der Linden & Hayes, 1972; Hokitika Chart¸, Eade, 1972; Jackson Chart¸, Carter, 1981.
Cook Strait Canyon Canyon 41ø37.00'S Latitude, 174ø50.00'E Longitude. A sinuous, much-branched canyon, generally trending north-west south-east on the south-eastern part of Cook Strait. Axis ranges in depth from about 200m-2500m at the point where it joins the Hikurangi Trench. Fiordland Basin Basin 45ø35.00'S Latitude, 165ø45.00'E Longitude. A basin extending southward towards Puysegur Bank. The northern part ends against a seaward extension of the continental slope. It trends parallel to, and 50km from, the coast. Sill to the Tasman Basin is 550m above the deepest part of the basin. Gable Ridge Ridge 38ø31.00'S Latitude, 178ø49.00'E Longitude. A ridge that trends parallel with the coast. Rises to a minimum recorded depth of 630m. Depicted on Mahia Chart¸, Arron & Lewis, 1992.
Gobey Bank Bank 33ø42.50'S Latitude, 171ø50.00'E Longitude. This name has been used following the nomenclature on the relevant hydrographic chart. Depicted on Three Kings Chart¸, Mitchell & Eade, 1990; NZ41.
Haast Canyon Canyon 43ø40.70'S Latitude, 168ø53.60'E Longitude. A canyon originating off the Haast River running off the shelf until it merges into Moeraki Canyon. Axis ranges in depth from about 200m-4600m. Depicted on Resolution Chart¸, van der Linden
& Hayes, 1972; Jackson Chart¸, Carter, 1981.
Hawke Sea Valley Valley 39ø37.53'S Latitude, 177ø53.73'E Longitude. A valley that trends south-eastward on the upper continental slope off Hawke Bay. Axis extends from a depth of 200m to a depth of 1000m. Depicted on Mahia Chart¸, Pantin, 1961; Turnagain Chart¸, Lewis, 1976; Mahia Chart¸, Arron & Lewis, 1992.
Hikurangi Plateau Plateau 37ø48.21'S Latitude, 178ø42.93'W Longitude. A seamount studded plain extending northwards from the base of the Chatham Rise to the Kermadec Trench. Depths typically range over 3250m-3750m before increasing near the Kermadec Trench. Depicted on Lachlan Chart¸, Carter, 1995; NZ Region Chart¸, CANZ, 1997.
Honeycomb Ridge Ridge 41ø45.00'S Latitude, 176ø16.00'E Longitude. A ridge that trends north-east
south-west, parallel with the coast at the foot of the continental slope, 60km off the Wairarapa coast. Depicted on Palliser Chart¸, Mitchell, 1988.
King Bank Bank 33ø57.00'S Latitude, 172ø17.00'E Longitude. A bank on Northmaria Ridge,
north-west of Manawatawhi / Three Kings Islands. Shoals to 29.5m. Depicted on Three Kings Chart¸, Mitchell & Eade, 1990; NZ 41.
Kiwi Seamount Seamount 31ø01.56'S Latitude, 173ø38.83'E Longitude. An isolated conical seamount, on
the slope between the Three Kings Rise and the South Fiji Basin, 400km north
of North Cape. Rises to 1000m from a depth of 2673m and has an area of 182.40km2. Depicted on Three Kings Chart¸, van der Linden, 1968; NZ 14600; NZ 14061; NZ 14605.
Lee Seamount Seamount 41ø06.89'S Latitude, 179ø31.89'E Longitude. An isolated conical seamount. Rises to 1750m from a depth of 2932m and has an area of 60.30km2. Located east of the lower North Island. Depicted on Cook Chart¸, Baldwin & Lewis, 1991.
Madden Basin Basin 40ø28.00'S Latitude, 177ø03.00'E Longitude. A basin that resembles an amphitheatre, 25km in diameter, incised into the continental shelf and slope between 15km and 40km offshore from southern Hawke's Bay Land District. Has steep, channelled sides and an almost flat floor at a depth of 1400m, representing an expanded head of the Madden Canyon. Madden Canyon Canyon 40ø30.00'S Latitude, 177ø05.00'E Longitude. A canyon that separates the North Madden Bank from the South Madden Bank. Leads from the Madden Basin to the Porangahau Basin. Depicted on Turnagain Chart¸, Pantin, 1961; Cook Chart¸, van der Linden, 1968; Turnagain Chart¸, Lewis, 1976; Cook Chart¸, Baldwin & Lewis, 1991.
Mercury Knoll Knoll 36ø31.31'S Latitude, 176ø30.95'E Longitude. A knoll east of the Mercury Islands, 78km east of Coromandel Peninsula. This is an isolated conical seamount which rises to 906m from a depth of 1250m and has an area of 44.70km2. Depicted on Cuvier Chart¸, Carter, 1976; Cuvier Chart¸, Wright, 1989.
Mernoo Saddle Saddle 43ø47.00'S Latitude, 174ø25.00'E Longitude. A saddle between the continental shelf off Banks Peninsula and the western end of Chatham Rise. Has an average depth of 500m. Depicted on Mernoo Chart¸, Herzer, 1977; Banks Chart¸, Herzer, 1977.
Middlesex Bank Bank 33ø57.00'S Latitude, 171ø45.00'E Longitude. A flat topped bank at depths ranging from 100m to 130m. Located north of the North Island. Depicted on Three Kings Chart¸, Mitchell & Eade, 1990; NZ 41.
Molyneux Canyon Canyon 46ø31.00'S Latitude, 170ø20.00'E Longitude. A canyon that cuts into the outer continental shelf and continental slope between 30km and 130km off the Clutha River / Matau, Otago. Descends to join the south part of Bounty Channel at a
depth of about 1500m. Depicted on Otago Chart¸, Carter, 1986; Nuggets Chart¸, Hughes, 1987.
Molyneux Channel Channel 46ø51.00'S Latitude, 170ø40.00'E Longitude. A channel that trends west-east, south south-east of Molyneux Canyon further offshore from the continental shelf. Has a floor depth of 1100m. Depicted on Otago Chart¸, Carter, 1986.
North Madden Bank Bank 40ø21.00'S Latitude, 177ø12.00'E Longitude. A north north-east south south-west trending bank separated from the South Madden Bank by the 1500m deep Madden Canyon and from the continental slope by a 600m deep saddle. Shoals to a minimum recorded depth of 180m. Depicted on Turnagain Chart¸, Pantin, 1961; Turnagain Chart¸, Lewis, 1976; Turnagain Chart¸, Garlick & Mitchell, 2002; NZ 23; NZ 26; NZ 57.
South Maria Ridge Ridge 34ø06.00'S Latitude; 171ø50.00'E Longitude. A ridge that is the southern component of the Maria Ridge. It is north-west trending offshore from New Zealand on the continental shelf. Depicted on Three Kings Chart¸, van der Linden, 1968; Three Kings Chart¸, Mitchell & Eade, 1990; NZ 21; NZ 23; NZ 41.
Three Kings Trough Trough 33ø50.00'S Latitude; 171ø45.00'E Longitude. An enclosed basin between the
two crests of the Maria Ridge. Extends from 5km to 70km north-west from Manawatawhi / Three Kings Islands. Axis increases in depth from 800m at its
south-east end to 2500m deep at its north-west end. Depicted on Three Kings Chart¸, van der Linden, 1968; Three Kings Shelf Chart¸, Eade, 1988; Three Kings Chart¸, Mitchell & Eade, 1990; NZ 41.
Urry Knolls Knolls 44ø36.00'S Latitude, 174ø13.00'E Longitude. A group of knolls on the continental slope south-east of Banks Peninsula. Rising from depths of 900m to crests of
500m-800m. Depicted on Banks Chart¸, Herzer, 1977; NZ 25; NZ 27; NZ 224; NZ 14600; NZ 14601.
