Notice of Final Decisions to Assign Place Names in the Ross Sea Region, Antarctica

Notice is hereby given of the final decisions of the New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa to assign the place names stated in the first column of Schedules 1 and 2 below, to the places described in the second column of the said Schedules; and to revise the place name stated in the first column of Schedule 3 below, to the place described in the second column of the said Schedule; and that such decisions take effect on the date of the New Zealand Gazette containing this notice.
Schedule 1
New Zealand Names
Barrett Glacier 84°37'S Latitude, 174°10'W Longitude. A glacier about 30km long, flowing from the vicinity of Mount Llano, north-west and then north-north-east to the Ross Ice Shelf. Lying immediately east of the Massam Glacier. Topographic map: SV 1-10/1 Shackleton Glacier (1:250,000). Not previously notified in the New Zealand Gazette, but published in the 4th Supplement to the Provisional Gazetteer of the Ross Dependency, dated c.1964.
Blorenge Buttress 76°43'S Latitude, 161°21'E Longitude. A very prominent, orange coloured pillar of Beacon sandstone, 4km west of the summit of Flagship Mountain, Convoy Range, Victoria Land. The pillar is flanked to the west by steep blue ice and a huge windscoop from Flight Deck Névé, and rises sheer from a large ice-free area to the north. Topographic map: Flagship Mountain (1:50,000). Not previously notified in theNew Zealand Gazette, but approved in 1977.
Drifter Cirque 76°35'S Latitude, 161°02'E Longitude. A cirque between Mount Schmidtman and Mount Naab at the north-east end of Eastwind Ridge, Convoy Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Flagship Mountain (1:50,000). Not previously notified in theNew Zealand Gazette but approved in 1993.
Holystone Slope 76°46'S Latitude, 161°20'E Longitude. A shallow, blue-ice distributory overflow from Flight Deck Névé, 2.5km wide, that flows north-west over subdued steps between Dotson Ridge and Dory Nunatak, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Alatna Valley (1:50,000). Not previously notified in the New Zealand Gazette but approved in 1993.
Low Nunatak 77°04'25?S Latitude, 161°57'00?E Longitude. A nunatak in the Cotton Glacier 4km north of the western end of Killer Ridge, Gonville and Caius Range, Victoria Land. About 1.5km long, the nunatak rises 50m above the surrounding ice surface to about 450m above sea level. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000). Not previously notified in the New Zealand Gazette.
The Cocked Hat 77°15'S Latitude, 162°45'E Longitude. A bluff-type mountain rising to 1100m, 6km south-west of Lizards Foot in Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Debenham Glacier (1:50,000). Not previously notified in the New Zealand Gazette,but published in the Provisional Gazetteer of the Ross Dependency, dated 1958, as a 1910-1913 British Antarctic Expedition name.
Tillergone Slope 76°44'S Latitude, 161°24'E Longitude. A shallow, blue ice glacial slope or overflow, 3km wide, which is a distributary of Flight Deck Névé over subdued steps between Dotson Ridge and Flagship Mountain, in Convoy Range, Victoria Land. Topographic maps: Flagship Mountain and Alatna Valley (1:50,000). Not previously notified in the New Zealand Gazette but approved in 1993.

Bachtold Glacier 77°07'30?S Latitude, 162°00'00?E Longitude. Glacier flowing north from Mount Chaudoin, Gonville and Caius Range, into the lower part of Cotton Glacier, Victoria Land. The glacier drains the broad slopes between Killer Ridge and Red Ridge. Topographic maps: Mount Mahony and Debenham Glacier (1:50,000).
Mount Basurto 76°56'S Latitude, 160°42'E Longitude. An ice-free mountain rising to 2000m at the south end of Noring Terrace, Convoy Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Cambridge Glacier (1:50,000).
Mount Bevilacqua 76°14'00?S Latitude, 162°28'30?E Longitude. A mostly ice-free mountain rising to1343m, 2.5km north of Mount Evans, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. The summitis situated at the union of Y-shaped ridge lines. Topographic map: Debenham Glacier (1:50,000).
Mount Brigham 77°07'S Latitude, 162°18'E Longitude. A peak at the centre of Gonville and Caius Range, Victoria Land, rising to 1450m, 4km west south-west of Mount Curtiss. Topographic map: Debenham Glacier (1:50,000).
Mount Chaudoin 77°09'15?S Latitude, 162°01'30?E Longitude. An abrupt mountain rising to about 1400m, at the western end of Gonville and Caius Range, Victoria Land. The mountain forms part of the divide between Bachtold Glacier and Griffiths Glacier. Topographic map: Debenham Glacier (1:50,000).
Coalbed Mountain 77°12'S Latitude, 160°16'E Longitude. An ice-free mountain rising to 2230m at Robison Peak, located between Cycle Glacier and Rim Glacier in eastern Head Mountains, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Skew Peak (1:50,000).
Ebel Hills 77°13'S Latitude, 160°51'E Longitude. A cluster of rugged hills at the head of Frazier Glacier, abutting the rim of Webb Cirque, and east of Skew Peak, Victoria Land. The hills are 2.5km long and rise to 2300m. Topographic map: Skew Peak (1:50,000).
Four Mile Cliff 77°12'S Latitude, 162°25'E Longitude. A rock cliff 7km long that flanks the southern side of Debenham Glacier, located north of Mount Bevilacqua, Victoria Land. The cliff rises 150m above the glacier and 600 m above sea level. Topographic map: Debenham Glacier (1:50,000).
Head Mountains 77°12'S Latitude, 160°05'E Longitude. A group of mountains to the south of Gateway Nunatak and at the head of Mackay Glacier, near the interior ice plateau of Victoria Land. From west to east the group includes Mount DeWitt, Mount Littlepage, Mount Dearborn and Coalbed Mountain. Topographic map: Skew Peak (1:50,000).
Heil Valley 77°11'30?S Latitude, 160°04'00?E Longitude. An ice-free valley 2.5km long that indents the northern part of V-shaped Mount Littlepage, Head Mountains, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Skew Peak (1:50,000).
Helicopter Mountains 77°11'30?S Latitude, 161°23'00?E Longitude. A series of rugged mountains west of Mount Mahony, Saint Johns Range, rising to 1700m at Mount James and including also from west to east Touchstone Crag, Mick Peak and Hott Peak. The mountains form the north-west end of Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Hopkins Nunataks 76°46'S Latitude, 160°24'E Longitude. A group of three nunataks rising to 2180m at the head of Cambridge Glacier, between the Coombs Hills and Convoy Range, Victoria Land. The nunataks extend west-east 2.5km and rise about 50m above Cambridge Glacier. Topographic map: Cambridge Glacier (1:50,000).
Hott Peak 77°12'40?S Latitude, 161°30'00?E Longitude. A steep ridgelike mountain with a sharp peak rising to 1550m between Mount James and Mount Mahony in east Helicopter Mountains, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Jatko Peak 77°11'S Latitude, 160°58'E Longitude. A sharp-pointed peak rising to 2050m, 3km north-west of Dykes Peak in Clare Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Skew Peak (1:50,000).
Mount Hubel 77°13'30?S Latitude, 161°54'00?E Longitude. A prominent ice-free mountain rising to 1450m in the north part of Kuivinen Ridge, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. The mountain stands above Miller Glacier and Ringer Glacier. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Mount Hush 77°14'30?S Latitude, 161°46'00?E Longitude. A steep ice-free mountain, 1400m, joined by a col to the central-east part of Kuivinen Ridge, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. The mountain extends east-north-east 1.6km into Ringer Glacier. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Mount James 77°12'S Latitude, 161°29'E Longitude. The highest mountain in Helicopter Mountains, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land, rising to 1700m, between Mick Peak and Hott Peak. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Mount Lewis 77°14'30?S Latitude, 161°31'00?E Longitude. A mountain rising to 1450m at thesouth-west end of Rutherford Ridge, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. A rock gable on the south-west face of the mountain provides an easily recognised landmark. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Lobeck Glacier 77°13'15?S Latitude, 161°46'00?E Longitude. A glacier flowing north-east between Rutherford Ridge and Kuivinen Ridge in Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. About 6km long, the glacier terminates at rock cliffs overlooking Miller Glacier with insignificant, if any, flow entering Miller Glacier. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Marchetti Glacier 77°11'S Latitude, 161°33'E Longitude. A glacier flowing from the north slope of Mount Mahony in Saint Johns Range into Cotton Glacier, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Mick Peak 77°11'30?S Latitude, 161°23'00?E Longitude. A peak rising to c1500m, 3kmwest-north-west of Mount James in Helicopter Mountains, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Noring Terrace 76°54'S Latitude, 160°40'E Longitude. A relatively level ice-covered terrace rising to 2000m with an area of about 3km square between Mount Gunn and Mount Basurto in south-west Convoy Range, Victoria Land. Ice from the terrace drains westward into Cambridge Glacier and also eastward in the short Scudding Glacier toward Battleship Promontory. Topographic map: Cambridge Glacier (1:50,000).
Prescott Spur 77°05'30?S Latitude, 162°16'30?E Longitude. A rock spur running north-west south-east and rising to 1250m between Robson Glacier and Pyne Glacier in Gonville and Caius Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Debenham Glacier (1:50,000).
Raney Peak 77°13'S Latitude, 160°32'E Longitude. A symmetrical peak rising to 2050m between Rim Glacier and Sprocket Glacier, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Skew Peak (1:50,000).
Mount Rowland 77°12'47?S Latitude, 161°42'00?E Longitude. A mountain with a sharp-pointed summit rising to 1550m in the central part of Rutherford Ridge, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Rutherford Ridge 77°13'30?S Latitude, 161°42'00?E Longitude. A transverse ridge, 9km long, extending south-west north-east across Saint Johns Range between Wheeler Valley and Lobeck Glacier, Victoria Land. The ridge rises to 1550m at Mount Rowland. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Sechrist Ridge 77°14'S Latitude, 162°25'E Longitude. A narrow rock spur, 3km long, descending north-east from the central ridge just east of Mount Evans and terminating 4kmnorth-east of Mount Bevilacqua, Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Debenham Glacier (1:50,000).
Stroup Peak 77°06'15?S Latitude, 162°37'00?E Longitude. A peak rising to 1100m at the eastern extremity Gonville and Caius Range, Victoria Land. The peak stands 5km east of Mount Curtiss, where it overlooks the north part of Wilson Piedmont Glacier. Topographic map: Debenham Glacier (1:50,000).
Touchstone Crag 77°12'S Latitude, 161°18'E Longitude. A rugged mountain rising to 1550m, 2km west of Mick Peak in the west part of Helicopter Mountains, Victoria Land. The abruptsouth-facing cliffs of the feature also mark the north-west extremity of Saint Johns Range. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Watson Valley 77°14'30?S Latitude, 161°34'00?E Longitude. A valley east of Mount Lewis in Saint Johns Range, Victoria Land. The valley opens southward to Victoria Upper Glacier, and is ice free except for a small glacier at the head wall. Topographic map: Mount Mahony (1:50,000).
Mount Welser 76°43'S Latitude, 162°09'E Longitude. A peak rising to 1150m in the central part of the ridge south of Albrecht Penck Glacier, Victoria Land. The peak is 5km east-north-east of Mount Davidson. Topographic map: Mount Endeavour (1:50,000).

Revised United States of America Name
Schwall Peak 76°52'S Latitude, 160°54'E Longitude. A rock summit rising to 1550m, west of Sharpend Glacier in Convoy Range, Victoria Land. The feature forms the extremity of a rock ledge at the south edge of Staten Island Heights, Victoria Land. Topographic map: Cambridge Glacier (1:50,000). Description and location revised, replacing previousNew Zealand Gazette, 24 June 2004, No. 76, page 1854.
