Open Season for Game in Fish and Game Regions
The Minister of Conservation declares an open season for game in the Fish and Game Regions, subject to the conditions specified in the First and Second Schedule of this notice.

The Minister of Conservation gives consent under Section 17 (2) of the Wildlife Act 1953 to the hunting or killing of game in the manner set out in this notice.

New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp
A game bird habitat stamp must be affixed to every licence to hunt or kill game. The following form of the 2004 New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp is approved .








The 2004 New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp has a face value of ten dollars ($10.00). A fee of two dollars ($2.00) only is payable in respect of every game bird habitat stamp supplied in respect of a licence to hunt or kill game.

FIRST SCHEDULE

Bag Limits
No person shall have in that person's possession on any one day, more than the number of game birds specified as the daily bag limit for the Fish and Game Region in which the game is taken, except on Sunday, 2 May 2004, a person may have in possession twice the number of game birds specified as the daily bag limit for Saturday, 1 May 2004.
A person may have in that person's possession more game than specified above, if all such game is labelled with the following details:
(a) The name and address of the person by whom the game was taken;
(b) The number of the licence to hunt or kill game held by the person by whom the game was taken;
(c) The name of the Fish and Game Region by which that licence was issued;
(d) The name of the Fish and Game Regions in which the game was taken; and
(e) The date on which the game was taken.
Waiver of Restrictions on Baiting, and Methods of Taking Game Baiting for Waterfowl
Persons may hunt or kill game of the family Anatidae (waterfowl) during the open season for game in all Fish and Game Regions where food has been cast, thrown, placed or planted, either during the current open season for game, the thirty (30) days immediately prior to the season or any other time during the year.

Magazine Shotguns - unpinned magazine shotguns can be used in all regions
Persons may hunt or kill game birds, as specified, in all Fish and Game Regions with any unpinned magazine shotgun of a calibre 12 gauge or less, which includes magazine extensions.

Use of Lead Shot Prohibited
No person may possess lead shot, or use lead shot, while hunting or killing water fowl within 200 metres of open water, with any gun of a 12 gauge calibre, on all lands managed by any Fish and Game Council and on all lands administered by the Department of Conservation. Non-toxic alternative shot may be used including steel.

For the purposes of this requirement, "water fowl" means any of the following game species:
Black Swan (Cygnus atratus)
Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)
Duck:
Grey Duck (Anas superciliosa) and any cross of that species with any other species, variety or kind of duck
Mallard Duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and any cross of that species with any other species, variety or kind of duck)
Paradise Duck (Casarca variegata)
Spoonbill Duck (New Zealand Shoveler) (Anas rhynchotis)
Pukeko (Porphyrio melanotus)

For the purposes of this requirement, "open water" means either:
(a) any area of land or seabed covered permanently or seasonally by water; or
(b) any area which is temporarily covered by water at the time of such possession or use, and that is contiguous to an area referred to in paragraph (a);
and the area covered by water is wider than 3 metres.

Guns of a Calibre Less Than 12 Gauge Temporarily Exempt in Relation to Use of Lead Shot
Hunters may continue to use lead shot in guns of a calibre less than 12 gauge for the 2004 season due to the present difficulty in obtaining non-toxic shot for smaller calibre guns. This exemption is temporary and will be reviewed before the 2005 game bird hunting season.

Camouflaged Rowboats
Persons may hunt or kill game within the following Fish and Game Regions, from unmoored camouflaged rowboats, subject to the conditions specified below.

Pegging Day
1. A person, following purchase of a 2004/2005 Whole Season game bird hunting licence, can reclaim the stand claimed during the 2003 Game Season at any time prior to 10.00 a.m. on 4 April 2004 in all Fish and Game Regions.
2. Otherwise unclaimed stands can only be claimed any time after 10.00 a.m. on 4 April 2004 in all Fish and Game Regions.
3. Stands are claimed by completing and attaching to the stand, or a stake or board at the stand site, the claim tag provided with the licence.
4. The stand claim tag must be affixed to a board or identifying label having plainly marked thereon the claimant's name and the number of the licence.
5. The licence holder claiming a stand must be present in person at the stand when marking up such.
6. NB: In the Auckland Waikato Region, only holders of 2004/2005 Whole Season Adult Game Bird Licences can claim hunting stands.
7. No one can claim more than one stand.
8. A stand cannot be claimed closer than 90 metres to a stand already claimed by another person without that person's consent.
9. Any stand not occupied by the claimant within one hour after the opening hour of hunting, on any day, can be occupied by another licence holder.

Conditions
1. These approvals shall not derogate from the principal conditions specified for each Fish and Game Region under the Second Schedule, which shall apply.
2. These approvals will expire at the end of the open season for game specified under the Second Schedule for each Fish and Game Region.

Definition of Area A: The following description refers to Area A
All lands north of a line running east/west north of the Whangape Harbour, then along the main ridgeline of the Maungataniwha Range and out to and including all lands north of Whangaroa Harbour.

Shooting Hours
6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., except that for the hunting of Paradise Shelduck on 26 and 27 February 2005, shooting hours will be from 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Special Conditions
1. No person shall wilfully leave on the hunting ground any game bird(s) shot or parts of any game bird(s) shot.
2. Camouflaged Rowboats: Persons may hunt or kill game from an unmoored camouflaged rowboat.
3. During 26 and 27 February 2005, Special Paradise Shelduck Season, there shall be no hunting within 500 metres of any urban sewage oxidation ponds.

Shooting Hours
Shooting hours are 6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., except that Canada Geese may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day for the 24 hour Moonlight Canada Goose Season: 6.30 a.m. 29 May 2004 to 11.30 p.m. 8 June 2004, and 6.30 a.m. 27 June 2004 to 11.30 p.m. 7 July 2004 and 6.30 a.m. 28 July 2004 to 11.30 p.m. 6 August 2004 inclusive.

Decoy Limit
No limit, except on Lake Waikare - a total decoy limit of 50 decoys per stand and no decoys to be placed within 50 metres of those placed by another hunter.

Special Conditions
1. From 1 May to 27 June 2004 inclusive, no person may use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Waikare, any drifting or temporarily moored floating stand or any stand, hide or maimai which is permanently fixed to the lake bed except within 180 metres of the outer margin of the lake or the shoreline of Motu Nuia Island (Grape Island).
2. No person may use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Ngaroto any fixed stand, pontoon, hide or maimai except within 85 metres of the margin of the lake.
3. No person may use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Rotokauri any fixed stand, pontoon, hide or maimai on any open water of the lake.
4. No person may wilfully leave on the hunting ground any game bird(s) shot or parts of any game birds shot.
5. No person may herd or drive waterfowl for the purpose of hunting or killing them.
6. No person may shoot game from any unmoored boat on the Waikato River north of the boat ramp at the confluence of the Mangawara Stream and the Waikato River at Taupiri on any of the first three days or the second weekend of the open season.
7. No person may possess a firearm in or on any unmoored vessel, except a rowboat, unless the firearm is dismantled or secured in a case, gunslip or other secure compartment, except when in use to retrieve wounded game.
It is now required that on public land the last (tagged owner) remove any maimai not tagged up for
2 years from the date of the last mark-up.

Closed Game Areas
1. All that area of the Waikato River below Mean High Water Spring Tide from the Tasman Sea inland to an imaginary line commencing from a marker at the exit of the Fisherman's Road drain on the north-western side of the river in Block VII, Maioro S.D., bearing 126 degrees true to a marker on the south-eastern side of the river.
2. The lagoon at Okoroire Park, Matamata-Tauranga Road, Okoroire and a strip of land 20 metres in width surrounding the lagoon.
3. The Kaitoke Creek, Great Barrier Island and its tributaries, and an area 100 metres in width on either bank from the main road bridge over the Kaitoke Creek upstream to the southern boundary of Allotment 185, Aotea Parish, and the eastern boundary of the State Forest Reserve, the Awana Stream and an area 100 metres in width on either bank from its confluence with the sea at
low-water mark to the point where the main tributary flowing across Allotment 178, Aotea Parish, meets the Awana Stream; the Saltwater Creek and an area 100 metres in width on either bank from its confluence with the sea at Oruawhara Bay to a point where the south-east boundary of Allotment N.W. 74, Aotea Parish, crosses the creek.
4. All DP 23519, being part Maungatapu Block, Blocks II,VI, Maungakawa S.D., being
15 hectares, the property of A.C. Allen, Riverdale, Piako, Morrinsville.
5. The township of Te Aroha.
6. All that area lying to the east of the Southern Motorway and known as Pahurehure Inlet.
7. 129 hectares, being part of the Manukau Harbour known as Waimahia Creek (excluding the oxidation pond).
8. Plan DP S 81922 of Lots 1-6, subdivision of Pt. Lot 7, DP 9441 and Pt. Sec 19, Block II, Whitianga S.D. 53.3353 hectares. Property of Mr. Andrew Hill.
9. Western Arm (part), Lake Whangape. All that area within (lakeward) a boundary created by straight lines between white posts and more specifically: In straight lines commencing from the white post numbered "1" to be found on the edge approximately 350 metres to the west of Herbert Road road end; south for approximately 600 metres along the shoreline to the white post numbered "2"; directly across the bay west to the spit and the white post numbered "3" located there; south for approximately 500 metres along the shore to the white post numbered "4"; inland in a south-easterly direction for approximately 150 metres to the white post numbered "5"; inland in a south south-westerly direction for approximately 600 metres to the white post numbered "6"; towards the lake shore in a northerly direction to the white post numbered "7"; directly across the inlet in a north-westerly direction to the white post numbered "8"; northwards along the shore for approximately 1400 metres to the white post numbered "9"; across the western arm in a
north-easterly direction to the white post numbered "10"; south for approximately 400 metres along the shore to the white post numbered "11"; directly across the inlet to the white post numbered "1".

Definition of Areas
The following descriptions refer to Local Authority Boundaries described on the Infomap 242B-2 Department of Survey and Land Information for the Eastern Region Fish and Game Council region.
Area A1: Tauranga District, Western Bay of Plenty District, that part of the South Waikato District within the Eastern Fish and Game Region and east of State Highway No. 1, Rotorua District, Kawerau District, Whakatane District and Opotiki District.
Area A2: Those parts of the South Waikato District west of State Highway No. 1 within the Eastern Fish and Game Region, Taupo District and Ruapehu District, which lie within the Eastern Fish and Game Region.
Area B1: Gisborne District.
Area B2: That part of Wairoa District within the Eastern Fish and Game Region.

Shooting Hours
6.15 a.m. to 6.15 p.m., except that in Areas A1, A2 and B1 from the day following the close of the mallard season to 20 February 2005 inclusive, Canada Goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day. For B2, Canada Goose may only be hunted 24 hours for 19 and 20 February 2005 inclusive. Note that these hours apply to those days when Canada Geese may be hunted - refer to table above.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Maimais
No maimai shall impede the use of navigable channels in the Tauranga Harbour, Ohiwa Harbour, Little Waihi Estuary, Lake Aniwhenua and Lake Taupo.

Maimais erected in the Little Waihi Estuary, Lake Aniwhenua, Ohiwa Harbour, Stump and Waihi bays of Lake Taupo must be dismantled and removed within 2 weeks of the close of the season (i.e. by
12 September 2004).

Registered Game Preserves (pheasant):
(i) Titoki Hereford Stud: The property situated along a 4 kilometre road frontage, at the top of Tikitere Hill from above Hell's Gate to opposite Moose Lodge entrance. Bounded by Fletcher Challenge Tikitere Forest and Okataina Scenic Reserve.
(ii) Benner's Brothers Farm: Located 8 kilometres up the Bush Road from Pongokawa. Bounded by Pongakawa River and Rotoehu Forest and Bush Road.
(iii) Equine Farm: Located approximately 6 kilometres in a north-west direction from Lake Rotoehu with Rotoehu Road and Fletcher Challenge's Rotoehu Forest on the main boundaries. Property is made up of 283 hectares being entirely enclosed within deer fence.
(iv) Treetops: Located Hearoa Road, Horohoro, being some 470 hectares with frontage to Great West Road, and bounded by the Horohoro Bluffs, the extremeties of the property being enclosed within deer fencing.
(v) Otama Partnership: Located 1559 Rangiuru Road, bounded by Rangiuru Road, Te Matai Road and Mangorewa River being Pt Lot 9, DP S 90953 Blk X1V, Maketu S.D. -TNA.

Registered Game Preserves:
Tim and Maree Kittows' property: 301 Gwavas Road Tikokino, Waipawa. 3.3 kilometres west along Gwavas Road, it bounds the Pan Pac Gwavas Forest and neighbouring properties. These properties are Chas Chestermans', George Williams' and Mike Rittson-Thomas (Totara Hill's).
Poronui Station: 16,500 acres at the end of Taharua Road, 20 kilometres east of the Napier-Taupo Road. Bordered at the East by Wharetoto 5B Trust land, to the South by the Mohaka River and East Taupo Lands Trust land, and the west by the Kaimanawa Forest Park.
Whanawhana Trust property: Lots 2 and 3, DP 24970, namely that area north and south of Whanawhana Road, Whanawhana, bordered by the Ngaruroro River in the south and the Otamauri Stream in the north.
Glencoe Station: Located in Central Hawke's Bay 8 kilometres south of Maraekakaho on State Highway No. 50. The property is 1,200 hectares bounded by Whakapirau Road at the back and private farm land on each side. These farms are owned by Mark Taylor, Graham De Gruchy, John Mulcaster, Nick Buckholt, John McPhee and Edwards brothers.

Then by straight lines to Pipiriki and Tawhata. Then by Tawhata Road to the boundary. Then by the generally eastern boundary of the region to Waiaruhe Road.
Area B: That area within the following boundary commencing at Waiaruhe Road. Then by that road, Owhakura Road, Whangaehu Valley Road and Fields Track to Kakatahi. Then by straight lines to Pipiriki and Makakaho Junction down the eastern bank of the Waitotara River to the sea. Then by the sea coast and generally eastern boundary of the region to Waiaruhe Road.
Area C: The balance of the region contained by the westerly boundaries of Area A and B and the sea coast between the Mokau and Waitotara river mouths.

Area A: Tararua/Wairarapa. East of main Ruahine and Tararua/Rimutaka ranges, apart from Area C.
Area B: Rangitikei/Manawatu/Horowhenua/Wellington. West of main Ruahine and Tararua/Rimutaka ranges.
Area C: South Wairarapa. East of the Rimutaka Range and south of the following boundary: From the summit of the Rimutaka Hill Road east along State Highway No. 2 to Featherston, east along State Highway No. 53 to the junction with Kahutara Road, and the Martinborough-Lake Ferry Road to Lake Ferry.

Hours of Shooting
6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., excluding Canada Goose that may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Special Conditions
Summer Hunting Registration 2005: Hunters participating in the summer goose season must register with the Fish and Game Council prior to hunting.

Definition of Areas
Wairau Lagoons
That area defined as all open waters, islands and the peninsula between Chandlers Lagoon and Big Lagoon, south of the Wairau River mouth, including Te Aropipi Channel and south to the White Bluffs.

Pheasant Area
The area west of the Bryant Range, north of State Highway No. 63 from St Arnaud to Kawatiri Junction, and east of the Hope and Arthur Ranges.

Motueka River Bermland
The area adjacent to the Motueka River downstream of the Alexandra Bluff Bridge within the boundaries of State Highway No. 61 and Old Wharf Road to the east and the Motueka River West Bank Road, Umukuri Road and Lodder Lane in the west.

Waimea River Bermland
That area known as the Waimea Bermland contained within the stopbanks (or a 200 metre strip from both riverbanks where stopbanks are not present) of the Waimea and Wairoa Rivers up to the junction of the Lee River and the Wai-iti River up to State Highway No. 6 (Wai-iti Bridge).

East Coast/Kaikoura Area
The area to the east of the Awatere Valley/Molesworth Road and the Redwood Pass Road.

Shooting Hours
6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. during May, then 6.45 a.m. to 6.15 p.m. until the end of Dabbling Duck Season 2004. Canada Goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day after 25 July 2004.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Special Conditions
1. All permanent hunting stands/maimais used for the purposes of hunting of game on the Wairau Lagoons must be situated above the mean high water level.
2. Moored camouflaged boats are permitted for hunting or killing game in the Wairau Lagoons, but shall not be within 200 metres of any other hunting stand.

Farmers who hunt their own property are allowed under section 19 of the Wildlife Act to do so without having to purchase a licence. This probably means you will not receive a current copy of the regional newsletter and national magazine. Contact the Nelson Fish and Game Office to place your address on the mailing list.

Special Condition
No person shall wilfully leave on the hunting ground the bodies or parts of bodies of any gamebird shot in this region.

Definition of Areas
Area A: All that part of the region encompassing Lake Wainono and Wainono Reserve and bounded to the north by Hook Beach Road, the west by State Highway No. 1, the south by Poingdestres Road and the east by the Pacific Ocean.
Area B: That part of the bed of the Waitaki River between Lake Waitaki Dam and the sea.
Area C: That part of the region not included in Area A and Area B.
Area D: That part of the region north of the Opihi River, only over agricultural grain crops and green feed paddocks and more than 200 metres from any water body.

Chukar Hunting: Chukar hunting is by permit only. Permits are available at no cost from the Fish
and Game office in Temuka.

Dorset Downs Game Preserve: That fenced area of Dorset Downs Station at Maungati near Timaru, marked with signposts reading Dorset Downs Game Preserve.

Shooting Hours
6.45 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., except that during the period 1 June 2004 to 10 April 2005 inclusive, Canada Goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season.

Decoy Limit
Lake Wainono and the Wainono Reserve: From opening day to the second Sunday after opening day, no person or persons sharing a stand shall use more than 25 decoys. No decoys to be placed within 50 metres of those placed by occupant(s) of another stand. Rest of season: No limit.

Special Conditions
No person shall wilfully leave on the hunting ground the bodies or parts of bodies of Black Swans or other game shot in this region.

Definition of Areas
Area A: The Clutha River catchment upstream from the Clyde Dam.
Area B: The Clutha River catchment downstream from the Clyde Dam, the Taieri River catchment downstream of the Paerau Weir, and all the coastal catchments between Shag Point and The Brothers Point on the east coast of the South Island.
Bendigo Hunting Preserve (Pheasant): Bendigo Hunting Preserve is defined as that fenced area of Bendigo station property at Bendigo, near Lake Dunstan, Central Otago, marked with signposts reading "Bendigo Hunting Preserve".

Shooting Hours
7.00 a.m. to 6.45 p.m. Area A; 7.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Area B, except that during the period 26 July 2004 to 31 March 2005 inclusive, Canada Goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season. Paradise Shelduck may be hunted during daylight hours only during the Paradise Duck Summer Season.

No limit.

Special Conditions
1. No person shall use or cause to be used on any water within the region for the hunting or killing of game, any fixed stand, pontoon, hide, loo or maimai, except within a distance of 10 metres from the water margin in non tidal waters, or from the low water mark in tidal waters, or from the outside edge of the raupo growth where raupo abounds, without the prior consent of the Otago Fish and Game Council.
2. No person may leave on the hunting ground the bodies or parts of bodies of Black Swan or other game shot in the Otago Fish and Game Region.
3. Shooting from a boat is prohibited on the Clutha River on the opening weekend only.
4. Canada Geese can be hunted during the closed season if an authorisation is obtained from the Otago Fish and Game Council.
