Pursuant to section 12 of the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946, notice was given on 18 October 2001 of the intention of the New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa to assign the names stated in the first column of the Schedule below to the respective places described in the second column of the said Schedule.
Objections were received to these proposed names and were dealt with pursuant to section 13 of the said Act.
I hereby declare that it is my decision that the names of these places shall be as referred to in the first column of the Schedule below, and that these decisions took effect on 9 September 2002 (for Mechanics Bay) and 29 October 2002 (for Black Rock Point).

Canterbury Land District
Black Rock Point Point located between Taylors Mistake and Harris Bay, approximately 2km south east of Sumner Head, Topographic Map 260-N36 and N37 Akaroa, GR 2492650E 5736000N. Shown on current mapping as Black Rock. This notice completes the statutory process started in 1948.
Mechanics Bay Bay along the northern shoreline and near the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupo, 1km south west of Awaroa/Godley Head, Topographic Map 260-N36 and N37 Akaroa, GR 2493600E 5734800N. Shown on current mapping as Mechanics Bay. This notice completes the statutory process started in 1948.
