Notice of Proposal for Review of the Biosecurity (National Bovine Tuberculosis Pest Management Strategy) Order 1998 Notice No. 1193

Pursuant to sections 62 (1) and 88 (10) of the Biosecurity Act 1993, I hereby give public notice of a proposal to review the Biosecurity (National Bovine Tuberculosis Pest Management Strategy) Order 1998.
Proposed Result of the Review
The proposed result of the review is amendments to
the Biosecurity (National Bovine Tuberculosis Pest Management Strategy) Order 1998 to:
(a) Extend the duration of the strategy for a period of
12 years to 30 June 2013 (although in accordance with the provisions of the Biosecurity Act 1993, the strategy will be subject to at least five-yearly reviews).
(b) Enable measures to be taken to reduce levels of bovine tuberculosis in cattle and deer herds, in the shortest feasible time, to 0.2% annual period prevalence.
(c) Eventually allow New Zealand to claim "official freedom" from bovine tuberculosis and so eliminate the associated trade risks.
(d) Modify the definition of management areas and movement controls and testing regimes to reflect the risks in such areas.
(e) Increase the area brought under vector control to contain and reduce vector risk areas.
(f) Provide for increased funding to enable strategy objectives to be achieved.

Any person may make submissions on the review proposal in writing to:
The Minister of Agriculture, Parliament Buildings, Wellington.
The closing date for submissions is Friday, 22 June 2001.
Submissions should be sent in time to reach the Minister of Agriculture by that date and state whether the person making the submission wishes to be heard in respect of that submission if an inquiry is held.
