General Approval Special Overdimension Vehicles Pursuant to regulation 49 of the Traffic Regulations 1976, and by way of a subdelegation from the Director of Land Transport Safety dated 18 December 1996, I, Wayne Robert Pettersson, Senior Engineer, hereby approve the operation of the vehicle types described in this notice contrary to the provisions of regulations 48b to 48d subject to the operating conditions specified in the relevant documents in the Second Schedule Vehicles of the types described in the First Schedule and which exceed the dimension limits described in this schedule cannot operate unless a Specific Approval has been issued to that vehicle under regulation 49a. This notice comes into effect on the 1st day of September 1998. However the period between 1 September 1998 and 1 August 1999 shall be deemed to be a transitional period in which any existing overdimension exemption relating to any of these vehicle types remains in force. First Schedule Definitions In this schedule The term ``SOV'' followed by a specific number relates to a document in the Second Schedule specifying the operating requirements for a particular type of special overdimension vehicle. Types of vehicles and excess dimension limits permitted (SOV1) Self-propelled machines designed principally for road maintenance or construction, including excavators, front-end loaders and road graders (but excluding motor scrapers). Front overhang (distance ahead of front of driver's seat) 6.0 metres Width 3.1 metres (SOV2) Motor-Scrapers Width 3.7 metres (SOV3) Forklifts (does not include tractors, trucks or multi-purpose vehicles fitted with forks) Front overhang (distance ahead of front of driver's seat) 6.0 metres (SOV4) Rigid trucks with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3500 kg and fitted with a snow plough blade Front overhang (distance ahead of front of driver's seat) 4.5 metres Width 3.1 metres (SOV5) Verge mowers and hedge trimmers on regulation sized vehicles Front overhang (distance ahead of front of driver's seat) 4.5 metres Width 3.1 metres (SOV6) Concrete pumps, personnel lifting buckets and aircraft fertiliser loaders on regulation sized vehicles Rear overhang the lesser of 85% of the wheelbase or 5.0 metres (SOV7) Aggregate chip spreaders on regulation sized vehicles Width 3.1 metres (SOV8) Semi-trailers and full trailers fitted with road metal crushers, screening plants or log haulers. Trailers fitted with road metal conveyors. Semi-trailers and full trailers fitted with road metal crushers, screening plants or log haulers. Width 3.1 metres Overall length of combination 22.0 metres Forward distance 11.0 metres at a width of 2.5 metres reducing uniformly to 10.5 metres at a width of 3.1 metres Rear overhang 5.0 metres Trailers fitted with road metal conveyors Rear overhang 6.0 metres (SOV9) Drilling Rigs fitted to regulation sized vehicles Rear overhang the lesser of 85% of the wheelbase or 5.0 metres Front overhang 5.0 metres (SOV10) Fertiliser spreaders Width 3.1 metres Rear overhang the lesser of 65% of the wheelbase or 3.2 metres for trucks under 9.5 metres in length or the lesser of 65% of the wheelbase or 3.7 metres for trucks at least 9.5 metres in length Second Schedule Operating conditions The special overdimension vehicles described in this notice must be operated in compliance with the requirements set out in the corresponding documents SOV1 to SOV10 (inclusive) produced by the Land Transport Safety Authority.
