General Approval Overdimension Mobile Cranes Pursuant to Regulation 49 of the Traffic Regulations 1976, and by way of a subdelegation from the Director of Land Transport Safety dated 18 December 1996, I, Wayne Robert Pettersson, Senior Engineer, hereby approve the operation of the vehicle types described in this notice contrary to the provisions of regulations 48b to 48d. Mobile cranes which exceed the dimension limits in the Second and Third Schedules cannot operate unless a specific approval has been issued to that vehicle under regulation 49a. This notice comes into effect on the 1st day of September 1998. First Schedule Types of Vehicles Category 1 Mobile Cranes Mobile cranes not exceeding the dimension limits described in the Second Schedule. Category 2 Mobile Cranes Mobile cranes exceeding the dimension limits described in the Second Schedule but not exceeding the dimension limits described in the Third Schedule. Definitions In this schedule ``Mobile crane'' means a non-load carrying self-propelled vehicle designed for lifting heavy objects by way of a boom with lifting gear. Second Schedule Dimension limits Dimension limits of a Category 1 Mobile Crane, as shown in Diagram 1. Overall width 2.5 metres Rear overhang 4.0 metres Front overhang (distance ahead of front of driver's seat) 3.0 metres Distance from rear of crane to front of crane (excluding boom) 11.0 metres Forward distance of crane carrier (excluding boom) 8.5 metres Height 4.25 metres Diagram 1 Third Schedule Dimension limits of a Category 2 Mobile Crane, as shown in Diagram 2. Overall width 3.1 metres [tn,2]Forward distance of crane carrier (excluding boom) 10.5 metres Rear overhang 5.0 metres for mobile cranes with forward facing booms 7.0 metres for mobile cranes with rearward facing booms supported on a trailer. Rear overhang measured from the rear axis of the trailer. [tn,2]Front Overhang (distance ahead of front of driver's seat) 3.0 metres for mobile cranes with rearward facing booms 5.0 metres for mobile cranes with forward facing booms Overall Length 19.0 metres for mobile cranes not towing a trailer 20.0 metres for mobile cranes with forward facing booms towing a trailer carrying counterweights 25.0 metres for mobile cranes towing a trailer supporting a rearward facing boom and carrying counterweights Diagram 2 Fourth Schedule Operating Conditions The mobile cranes described in this notice must be operated in compliance with the requirements set out in the document ``Overdimension Mobile Cranes: A Guideline to Operating Requirements'' dated August 1998 produced by the Land Transport Safety Authority.
